Mozambique

The IGC held initial talks with the Government of Mozambique in March 2010 and the Mozambique country program was officially established in October of 2010. The country program’s key areas are: (i) agriculture; (ii) infrastructure; (iii) private sector development; and (iv) natural resources. The IGC Mozambique country office in Maputo is hosted by the Ministry of Planning and Development.

The program has made the most progress so far in agriculture and infrastructure. In agriculture, the IGC is supporting the government in the design and implementation of a program for increased production and productivity, while also conducting research on mobilizing migrant remittances for agricultural modernization. In infrastructure, the country program conducted rapid response analyses of the urbanization and low-income housing challenges in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo. A seminar on the theme was held in Maputo from June 1st to 3rd. The program is conducting research specifically aimed at the design of incentives to improve customs, as well as an evaluation of the impact of railways investments on transport costs and business productivity. Projects in the areas of private sector development and natural resources are being designed as the demand is scoped within the country.

Research Project

After initial interest of the Government of Mozambique in collaborating with the IGC on growth questions, this visit produced consensus around the IGC work plan and placement/organisational aspects of the IGC in Mozambique.
Research Project

This project seeks to develop our understanding of how electoral conduct can be improved in emergent African democracies. We are interested in understanding the conditions that enable less illicit behaviour to surface and more electoral participation from citizens to materialise.
