Urbanisation, growth and poverty reduction: The role of secondary cities

Past Event Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania Cities

IGC Tanzania ran a joint event with the University of Dar es Salaam  (Economics department) to present the results of the study "Urbanisation, growth and poverty reduction: the role of secondary cities", led by Joachim De Weerdt. The event brought together UDSM based researchers and relevant policy makers.

The study looks into the role of secondary cities in poverty reduction and broader urbanisation processes. In particular it looks at the decision making processes of migrants, whether to migrate, where to migrate, and so no. As such it should contribute to a broad set of different forms of urbanisation policy in both the primate and secondary cities; it also provides evidence for anti-poverty programs and helps the government understand the likely future dynamics of urbanisation in Tanzania.
