Sir Nicholas Stern is the IG Patel Professor of Economics and Government at the London School of Economics. After 25 years in academic life, he was chief economist of the World Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and head of the Government Economic Service and second permanent secretary at HM Treasury. He was the principal author of the report of the Commission for Africa published in 2005 and led the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change, published in October 2006. In October 2007 he was appointed to the House of Lords as a non-party political peer.
