Empowering local communities to oversee waste management services
Project Active from to Sustainable Growth, State Effectiveness and Waste
This project aims to address the public health challenge of open burning of household waste in Uganda by decentralising waste management authority to the lowest level jurisdiction, which could help ensure that pickup schedules are appropriate and that services are reliable. The study trains local chairpersons to oversee and select waste collection contractors with the goal of reducing informal waste disposal. The effectiveness of this approach is measured through a randomised experiment comparing treated zones with control zones managed by municipal authorities.
