Implementing the National Development Strategy: The pigeon pea value chain

Project Firms and Farms

This project aims to support the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Economy & Finance in identifying policy measures to stimulate the development of the pigeon pea value chain.

Pigeon pea is a highly promising crop that could potentially play an important role in the transformation of the Mozambican countryside, poverty reduction and foreign exchange earnings over the next decades. The study will adopt a value-chain approach, analysing and describing the whole chain, from the production and distribution of inputs to extension support, market information, transport logistics and processing.

The methodology will involve the analysis of existing data sources and compiled studies. Subsequently, interviews will be conducted with a wide range of key stakeholders from the public sector, private sector and academia. The research team will visit the key producing regions, particularly the province of Zambézia.
