Measuring demand for groundwater irrigation: Experimental evidence from conservation payments
This project evaluates the effectiveness of “conservation credits”—payments for reduced groundwater use—among smallholder farmers in Gujarat, India, using a randomised controlled trial. It aims to generate the first experimental evidence on groundwater demand and assess the cost-effectiveness and policy potential of voluntary conservation incentives in energy-intensive agriculture.
