Betting against the future: Smallholder farmers in Africa, forward contracts, and storage

Project Active from to Sustainable Growth, Firms, Trade and Firm capabilities

This project studies how African smallholder farmers decide when to sell crops, use storage, or delay sales through forward-selling options. Using innovative “Nano Commodity Exchanges” located near villages, it runs experiments on decision-making, including price forecasting and willingness to pay for storage, to inform policies on commodity exchanges, storage systems, and market development.
