Water market design for climate resilience

Project Active from 1 Feb 2025 to 25 Sep 2026 Sustainable Growth and Cities that Work

Major cities face water scarcity due to climate change, population growth, and groundwater depletion. This project uses Cape Town's “Day Zero” crisis to explore how the design of municipal water markets influences the economic impact of water shortage. It examines the impacts of increased water tariffs on firms and households and evaluates potential outcomes under alternative designs.
