Zambia Evidence Lab Mining and Infrastructure Map
The Zambia Evidence Lab has developed an interactive geospatial platform that brings together open-source and public administration data to visualise key infrastructure and mining activity across six countries: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, and Malawi. The platform consolidates previously siloed data sources into a single, publicly accessible map kept current through a scheduled refresh system pulling from official government sources.
The platform offers a comprehensive view of the region's resource landscape, covering active and planned mining operations, energy infrastructure such as power plants and transmission lines, and transport networks including roads, railways, and ports. Continental-scale datasets on major mineral deposits, deforestation patterns, and road networks sit alongside a real-time dashboard of mining sector KPIs, giving users both a spatial and analytical lens through which to monitor activity, track trends, and inform planning across the region.
Built on open-source GIS tools and web mapping frameworks, the platform is designed for sustainability, scalability, and seamless handover to local partners. By unifying multiple data streams into one accessible interface, it serves a broad range of stakeholders including researchers, policymakers, investors, and civil society organisations, providing the consolidated geographic intelligence that effective resource governance and regional development planning demands.
