The International Growth Centre in Ghana (IGC), in collaboration with the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) held a colloquium on Building Effectives Cities for Growth on 28th February 2014 at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra, Ghana.

The aim of the event was to bring together policymakers, practitioners, civil society organisations and researchers to brainstorm and identify the crucial issues for research and policy under this theme. The workshop focussed on the following three broad issues that underpin the success of great cities: Infrastructure (housing and roads), Social Amenities and Services (public transport, sanitation and health), and Security (discipline and safety).

The keynote address was given by the Honourable Minister of Local Government and Rural Development followed by a presentation by Prof. Ralph Mills-Tettey on ‘Effective Cities: What We Know and Where We Are’. The former Mayor of Accra, Mr. Nat Nuno- Amarteifio was amongst the discussants.
