Capacity Building Course: Macro-Development and Long-Term Growth
Join IGC Mozambique, in partnership with Eduardo Mondlane University and STEG, for a three-week capacity building course exploring macro-development, long-term economic growth, and evidence-based policy analysis in developing economies. The course will equip graduate students, lecturers, and researchers with practical tools for growth modelling and macroeconomic policy analysis, including hands-on applications using the World Bank Long-Term Growth Model (LTGM).
Open to all interested students, researchers, lecturers, and policy practitioners, this three-week capacity-building course explores the foundations of macro-development and long-term economic growth in developing countries, with a particular focus on the challenges and opportunities facing Mozambique. Organised by International Growth Centre Mozambique in partnership with Eduardo Mondlane University and STEG, the course aims to strengthen local analytical capacity and promote evidence-based economic policymaking.
The course examines key themes shaping long-run growth and structural transformation, including productivity, human capital, fiscal and monetary policy, public investment, commodity cycles, and economic resilience. Participants engage with both theoretical and practical approaches to macroeconomic analysis, including hands-on applications using the World Bank Long-Term Growth Model (LTGM), a tool widely used to analyse growth scenarios and long-term development trajectories.
Delivered by Arthur Mendes from the World Bank’s Development Economics Prospects Group (DECPG), the programme combines lectures, discussions, and applied exercises designed to support a new generation of researchers and policy analysts in Mozambique. Participants also have the opportunity to engage directly with the instructor and peers throughout the course, encouraging collaboration and dialogue around macroeconomic policy and development challenges.
Course Work Programme
The course will meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with Tuesdays and Thursdays reserved for assignments, independent work, and office hours. It will combine lectures, hands-on exercises, and student presentations, including a final-week project or policy-simulation presentations.
Week 1 is open to all participants and requires only introductory knowledge of macroeconomic theory and Excel.
Weeks 2 and 3 are designed at an intermediate level and assume some knowledge of macroeconomic theory and general equilibrium models.
Note: Laptops are required for the Hands-on sessions
