Jobs creation and labour market issues in Sierra Leone
Like many other developing countries, Sierra Leone continue to face severe unemployment challenges as over 70% of its youthful population are either unemployed or underemployed. As a result of this, as part of the medium-term national development strategy, the government has prioritised creating 500,000 jobs spread over the 7 years implementation duration of the plan.
In view of the above, in an effort to support government, the International Growth Centre (IGC), in partnership with the Ministries of: Planning and Economic Development; Youth Affairs; and Labour, Employment and Social Security organises this event.
The objectives of the event are as follows:
- To understand what is being done by both the policy makers and private sector in terms of creating the 500,000 jobs; and
- IGC researchers to present and discuss some of the key findings of related jobs creation projects and interventions. This could be useful to help shape government thinking and policies related to jobs creation.
Participants are drawn from policymakers, development partners including NGOs, civil society organations, private sector, students, researchers and members of the fourth estate.
