Energy Insights and Innovation Lab (EIIL)
The Energy Insights and Innovation Lab (EIIL) is a partnership between Tata Power, India's largest integrated private energy company, and the London School of Economics, supported by the International Growth Centre (IGC). The Lab is designed as a platform for applied research at the intersection of behavioural science, AI and data analytics, and energy systems modelling.
About EIIL
EIIL addresses the challenge of rapidly growing electricity demand in India and other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) while supporting utilities in building cleaner, more affordable, and more reliable power systems.
Its work is guided by three objectives:
- Accelerating energy system decarbonisation
- Improving affordability for both utilities and consumers
- Enhancing the quality of electricity services through evidence-based approaches
On 18 May 2026, the IGC hosted a fireside chat at LSE with Tata Power CEO, Dr. Praveer Sinha. In this Voxpop, we speak to event speakers about the launch of the Energy Insights and Innovation Lab (EIIL) to accelerate India's energy transition.
A defining feature of the Lab is its operational collaboration with Tata Power, providing researchers with access to rich utility datasets and opportunities to design, pilot, and evaluate interventions in real-world settings.
The Lab also offers a dedicated workspace in Mumbai to host visiting researchers, research assistants, PhD students, and post-doctoral fellows.
Through regular open calls for research ideas, and embedding research within the utility, EIIL significantly reduces lead times for piloting and evaluating interventions with real consumers, while generating insights that can inform electricity system design and policy across other LMICs.
The Lab combines two complementary capabilities: field experimentation to test solutions that improve energy system performance and resilience, and energy systems modelling to assess their impacts at city, regional, and national scales.
Research independence is a founding principle. EIIL is governed by a Partnership Advisory Board, with findings intended for publication and the creation of public goods that can support energy sector decision-making across LMICs.
