Moving up a Gear: Can a free bike help a girl’s education in northern India?

Video 2 Oct 2019 State and Women's Economic Empowerment

In 2006, the government of Bihar introduced a scheme that aimed to improve school access and reduce the gender gap in secondary school enrollment by providing girls with a bicycle.

This 2012 video - updated for our IGC10 campaign - looks at the results of an IGC study that evaluated the scheme.
