This prestigious appointment marks a milestone in the IGC's ongoing work to promote inclusive and sustainable growth.

Sir Andrew Steer is a leader in sustainable development and climate change advocacy. Sir Andrew has served most recently as the founding President and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund. Sir Andrew is a board member of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, a member of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED), and a Global Agenda Trustee for the World Economic Forum.

His contributions have been recognised globally, including through his knighthood in 2024, in honour of “his sustained contribution as one of the world’s best-known practice-based leaders in global sustainable development economics, with a focus on climate change and poverty reduction."

Jonathan Leape, Executive Director of the IGC, said:

“We are thrilled to welcome Sir Andrew Steer to the IGC and the Global School of Sustainability. As Director General at DFID, Sir Andrew played a central role in establishing the IGC. He has been a key international advocate of the need to address the challenges of poverty and climate change together by promoting inclusive and sustainable growth in developing countries - which is IGC’s core mission. His new position opens up exciting new opportunities to advance our mission.”

Professor Lord Nicholas Stern, the Chair and co-founder of the Global School of Sustainability, said:

“The importance and potential of this initiative has enabled us to attract an outstanding international figure to play a leading role in the creation of GSoS and building its impact. We are extraordinarily fortunate that Andrew will be joining us, and I look forward very much to working with him.”
