Amira El-Shal

Amira El-Shal is Assistant Professor of Economics at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science, Cairo University, and Lead Regional Economist at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). Her research applies rigorous empirical methods, including randomized controlled trials, to questions in development, health, and labor economics across Egypt and the wider MENA region. Before joining IsDB, Amira was Associate Director of Research at J-PAL MENA. Her earlier experience spans the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as well as advisory roles with the Office of the Economic Affairs Advisor to the President of Egypt and Egypt's Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation. She holds a PhD in Economics from City, University of London, and an MSc in Economics from University College London.
