James Fenske is an Associate Professor in Economic History at the University of Oxford. Topics of his current papers include the role of ecologically-driven gains from trade in the development of pre-colonial states, the high prevalence and rapid disappearance of African polygamy, the role of environmental shocks in the dynamics of the slave trade, and the adaptation of property rights to trade before colonial rule.
