Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is currently Vice President of Ghana and an Economist. He was formerly Visiting Professor of Economic Governance at Central University College, Ghana. Dr. Bawumia has a PhD in Economics from Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada with specialisation in Macroeconomics, International Economics and Monetary Economics. He has also worked as a Consultant, Resident Representative, African Development Bank Group in Zimbabwe, and Visiting Research Associate at the Department of Economics at the University of Oxford. He has also been Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. His research interests are in the areas of monetary policy and financial sector development, and international economics.   Between 1996 and 2000, Dr. Bawumia served as an Assistant Professor of Economics at Hankamer School of Business, Baylor University, Texas, USA, where he received the Young Researcher Award in 1998. He joined the central Bank of Ghana in 2000 as senior Economist and rose to the position of Deputy Governor (2006-2009). As Chairman of Ghana’s Capital Markets Committee his team was responsible for the strategy for accessing the international capital markets with a debut $750 million dollars in 2007.  Dr. Bawumia was the Vice-Presidential Candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party in the 2008 Ghanaian Presidential Elections.   Dr. Bawumia holds Bachelor’s, Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Buckingham University (U.K), Oxford University (Lincoln College), UK, and Simon Fraser University (Canada). He also a holds the Chartered Institute of Bankers (U.K) diploma (ACIB).and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (FCIB), Ghana.
