Maria Freire is an economist who has been working in the last fifteen years in areas related to urban economics and public finance. She worked with the World Bank in different capacities until 2009. Since then she has continued her work with the Bank as consultant and peer reveiwer, while teaching Urban Economics and Policy at Johns Hopkins University and contributing to selected programs such as the Growth Dialogue Initiative at GW University. Mila has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California in Berkeley, and a Degree in Economics and Finance from Technical University in Lisbon.

During her career, she has taught at the university, published in a variety of fields (recently focused on decentralisation, municipal and urban economics), and promoted joint-programs with partner institutions dealing with public finance and municipal management.
