Matt Butler is a Policy Economist for the Climate and Growth Initiative at the International Growth Centre (IGC), based at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The Initiative covers all aspects of sustainable growth, including climate adaptation and resilience, the green transition, and the conservation of natural capital.
Prior to joining the IGC, Matt worked as a freelance consultant focused on sustainable industrialisation. This work included advising corporate clients and government policymakers, as well working on World Bank publications covering industrialisation strategy and the impacts of climate change on Ethiopia’s competitiveness and export sectors. From 2002 to 2017, Matt was a Senior Economist at DFID (now FCDO), with long-term postings in Ethiopia, the Caribbean, the Palestinian Territories, Afghanistan, and Cambodia. Matt holds an MSc in Quantitative Development Economics from the University of Bristol and a BA in Economics from the University of Sussex.
