Gerard McCarthy is a PhD candidate in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs at Australian National University (ANU) and a Visiting Fellow in  the University of Yangon's Department of International Relations. He has a Bachelors in Economic & Social Sciences from the University and has had published works on the political situation in South Sudan.

His current research focuses on the intersection between transitions to democracy, conflict management and information technology.
