Heike Harmgart

Dr. Heike Harmgart is heading EBRD’s activities in Jordan since the beginning of the Bank’s expansion to the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Region. EBRD started investing in Jordan end of 2012 and has since then committed over USD 1.3 bn in investments, close to half in the energy sector with a special focus on renewables. With the launch of EBRD’s activities in the West Bank and Gaza (May 2017) and Lebanon (September 2017), Heike became the Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Region. She is based in Amman, Jordan.

She was previously covering the region as well as Turkey as the Senior Economist in charge of the Macro Economic and Structural Economic Analysis. She has published in many peer reviewed journals including work on the impact of innovation and government policies on growth. Since 2014 she is a fellow at the WZB in Berlin.

Prior to joining the EBRD, Heike worked several years for the Economist Group, mainly on emerging markets in the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). She holds an Economics Master’s degree from Berlin’s Humboldt University and a PhD in Economics from University College London (UCL).
