Quamrul Chowdhury served as a Lead Climate and Sustainable Development Negotiator of the 48 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and 134-G-77 Developing Countries at UN bodies including UNFCCC and UNCBD for over three decades. He served as Chair of UN Kyoto Protocol Joint Implementation Committee and was a member of UN Climate Adaptation Committee as a nominee of the developing countries. Quamrul also served as a Senior Policy Adviser of Adam Smith International.

A pioneer of environmental and sustainable development movement in Asia-Pacific region, Quamrul Chowdhury was a lead author of Bangladesh National Environment Management Action Plan (1995), Bangladesh National Adaptation Programme of Action (2005 & 2008 update), Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan (2008 & 2009) and Bangladesh Roadmap to National Adaptation Plan (2015). He also edited Bangladesh State of Environment Report (1998, 1999, 2000 & 2001), Bangladesh State of Arsenic (2000 & 2001), State of The Sunderbans (2000) and Bangladesh State of Biodiversity (2000).

Quamrul Chowdhury was one of the definitive voices of sustainable development, green growth, water and environment in the Asia Pacific region. He delivered lectures and mentored PhD students at University of Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Harvard, Tufts, Tokyo, Paris, Zurich, Geneva, Bonn and Dhaka.
