Harnessing mobile money data to modernise economic measurement in Rwanda
Together with the Rwandan government, the authors of this report used transaction-level data from Mobile Money (MoMo) accounts to build a high-frequency consumption and income panel. They obtained one month of the universe of MoMo transactions and explored the nature of transactions across different account types.
Based on this, they used a predictive model to assign individual probabilities to users of being an informal merchant to categorise users as business and mere subscribers.
