Trade and regional integration

Non-tariff barriers are broadly cited as key barriers to trade integration and relationships within the East African Community. How have initiatives to eliminate non-tariff barriers performed, and what practices can be systemically enforced? What are the costs to government revenues, traders, and consumers of divergent administrative customs platforms and processes? Secondly, what kinds of systems could be employed to better incentivize compliance among the long chain of actors engaged in the region’s trade? In addition, what are the projected consequences for country specific and regional growth of—gradually or abruptly—lowering or eliminating some or all of the duties on the EAC’s sensitive item list?
