Country Economist - Sierra Leone

Salary from £31,000 net of taxes depending on experience and local market conditions plus an annual retirement contribution supplement of 10% net salary.

The International Growth Centre (IGC) works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. We are a global research centre with a network of world-leading researchers and in-country teams and initiatives working across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Based at LSE and in partnership with the University of Oxford, we are majority funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). We work to improve the productivity of people and firms as the key driver of sustainable economic development. 

Our core thematic areas in Sierra Leone are: 1. Inclusive, sustainable growth and climate change; 2. Domestic revenue mobilization (including decentralized to cities); 3. Firm/market system productivity; 4. Clean energy for productive use; 5. State institutions and performance, democracy, resilience, and national cohesion in a fragile region. Country Economists are the in-country representatives of the IGC, reporting to the Country Director. They form a bridge between senior policymakers and researchers, engage in research, and lead project management. This requires a highly pro-active and organised approach, utilisation of advanced economic research skills and policy knowledge, and a passion and skill for impacting policy.

Selected Essential Requirements

  • Masters degree in economics, development economics, public policy/administration, or a related discipline.
  • Ability to independently conduct complex data cleaning and economic analysis using STATA.
  • Understanding of economic research methodologies, macroeconomics, and development economics.
  • Technical expertise in at least one the following thematic areas: 1. Sustainable Growth; 2. Private Sector Development, Firm Productivity, and Exports; 3. Urbanisation.
  • Excellent communication skills, including in written English and for developing strong professional relationships.
  • Ability to work as a dynamic self-starter with minimal supervision, to effectively organise own workload under pressure.

Finance Administrator

9-month Fixed Term Contract

Salary from £33,558 to £38,541 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £41,404 pa inclusive of London allowance

The Finance Administrator sits within the IGC Finance team, based in the IGC’s central London ‘hub.’ The role reports to the Head of IGC Financial Management and is responsible for processing fee claims, expenses, invoices and tax payments across the organisation, as well as maintaining stakeholder contact and relationships across the IGC. 

Candidates should have advanced Microsoft Excel skills, an ability to analyse payment data to identify anomalies and investigate issues, and an ability to work with a range of teams across a large and complex organisation.

Salaries will be commensurate with experience, considering pay equity within the Centre.  Salary is no less than £50,000 gross per annum plus 10% of net retirement contribution supplement and inclusive of allowances

The International Growth Centre (IGC) works with policymakers in developing countries to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through pathbreaking research. We generate new evidence and innovative new ideas to improve the productivity of people and firms, as the key driver of sustainable economic development, and to support our government partners in transitioning to low-carbon growth pathways and protecting vulnerable populations. The IGC is a global research centre with a network of world-leading researchers and in-country teams and initiatives working across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Based at LSE and in partnership with the University of Oxford, we are majority funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The IGC is currently a Country Economist to be based in Amman. Country Economists work with the country leadership team in developing and implementing the country strategy, identifying opportunities for policy influence, connecting researchers with policy makers and supporting the generation of research projects, and undertaking economic analysis and writing policy briefs. The team supports researchers in implementing research projects and identifying opportunities for policy engagement; manages country programme activities and generates reports on research and policy developments; contributes to the ongoing evaluation of the programme; supports the dissemination of research outputs to maximise policy impact; and works on IGC research projects where opportunities arise. The country leadership team will include a Country Director and Lead Academic and the team also includes a Junior Programme Officer.

Applicants should have strong economics skills, excellent quantitative skills in economic analysis, a sophisticated understanding of economic policy, and hold a post-graduate degree in economics, public policy, or a related discipline. Successful applicants will be dynamic self-starters with excellent written and oral communication skills. They will also demonstrate a team-oriented, respectful and collaborative approach to working with others. Applicants must be fluent in spoken and written Arabic.
