Public lecture: Making cities work in the developing world

On 25 May, the IGC Cities that Work initiative held a lecture at the LSE entitled "Making cities work in the developing world".

Ed Glaeser, chair of the Cities that Work council and research director of IGC's cities programme, talked about the importance of cities for development and the need for policy to tackle the downsides of density in cities. He also introduced the Cities that Work initiative.

Cities that Work combines the economic expertise of the IGC research network with the hard-won knowledge of urban planning practitioners and policymakers in developing a policy-orientated synthesis of research, and a committed network of individuals with a shared vision for urban policy.

The initiative is led by a Council, currently comprised of Ed Glaeser (Harvard), Paul Collier (Oxford), Patricia de Lille (Mayor of Cape Town), Jennifer Musisi (Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority), and Tony Venables (Oxford).
