IGC Bangladesh Young Economist call for proposals

We are inviting submissions of research proposals from Bangladeshi students to be presented at the upcoming conference Resilient and resurgent Bangladesh: Sustaining economic growth in a changing climate taking place on 19 and 20 July, 2023, in Dhaka.

This is an opportunity for presenters to get feedback on their research and learn about important policy issues from policymakers. This initiative seeks to promote a culture of research among young students of economics, public policy, development studies and other related fields in Bangladesh. Participating in the conference means students will be able to network with economists from leading universities.

Five participants will be selected to make 15-minute presentations and receive feedback from leading economists and researchers attending the seminar. We will accept complete research projects but also encourage submission of early-stage research with a clearly defined research idea and sound methodology.

Research themes

IGC’s research focuses on sustainable growth policies in developing countries. Sustainable growth refers to countries developing their potential in an inclusive way that improves social, environmental, and economic well-being for all, including for future generations. We are working with our partners in governments and with other stakeholders to put sustainable and inclusive growth at the core of ‘building back better’ from the pandemic. It is increasingly clear that creating jobs, raising incomes, and reducing poverty must go hand in hand with efforts to increase resilience to climate shocks and to accelerate the decarbonisation of energy supply and production to ensure the well-being of current and future generations.

Eligibility criteria

  1. The presenter must be a Bangladeshi citizen and reside in Bangladesh.
  2. The research team member presenting at the conference must be currently enrolled in an academic programme or have been enrolled in an academic programme on or later than 30 June, 2018.

Selection criteria

  • Relevance of research to policymaking in Bangladesh
  • Contribution to literature
  • Research design

Application process

Apart from information about the research team, the application form has two broad questions.

In the research summary, please mention the research question(s) and context. For example: if you are conducting research on the economic impact of tax break on export-oriented industries, clearly state the specific research question, which policies the research refers to, which industries will the research address, and why this is important. You should explain how your research can contribute to policymaking in Bangladesh, and wider academic literature, amongst others.

In the research design section, please clearly explain the research methodology, identification strategy, sampling plan (if applicable), and anything else relevant to the design.

If the presenting researcher is based outside Dhaka, the IGC will manage accommodation for the researcher for one day. However, researchers will have to manage their own travel to the conference venue.

The deadline for submission is 5 July, 2023. Results will be announced on 9 July, 2023.
