Women, institutions, and entrepreneurship

Past Event Intercontinental Hotel, Lusaka Entrepreneurship, Firms and Women's Economic Empowerment

IGC in collaboration with the Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ) is pleased to invite you to join our Lead Academic Professor Nava Ashraf for a public discussion on Women, institutions, and entrepreneurship: What can we do to level the playing field for women entrepreneurs.

Prof. Ashraf is presenting her groundbreaking work on the role of institutions in promoting entrepreneurship, especially among female entrepreneurs in Zambia. In 2016, Prof. Ashraf and co-authors conducted a complete census and spatial mapping of all 48,000 businesses in Lusaka. The data analysis shows that there is a clear gap between male and female entrepreneurs in Lusaka along important dimensions: women earn less than men in good and bad weeks (even after controlling for factors such as education and other demographic characteristics), and women are less cooperative with other entrepreneurs than men are. The project by our researchers provides detailed information about the earning gap and sectoral distribution of male and female entrepreneurs in Lusaka, and potential channels through which this gap can be narrowed.

Discussants:

  • Unikey Mutale - Director of Gender in Development, Ministry of Gender
  • Prisca Chikwashi - Chief Executive Officer, Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI)
  • Chiselebwe Ng'andwe - Lecturer in Economics, University of Zambia (UNZA)
