Frederico Finan is a Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Economics and the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. He is Co-Director of Berkeley’s Center for Economics and Politics (BCEP), a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a Research Fellow of the Bureau for Research in Economic Analysis of Development (BREAD), and a member of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at MIT. In 2013, he was named an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. He earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from UC Berkeley and previously held faculty positions at UCLA and Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Finan’s research lies at the intersection of development economics and political economy, with a focus on governance, corruption, and public sector performance in low- and middle-income countries. His work combines theoretical and empirical methods, including field experiments and quasi-experimental designs, to study how institutions shape the behaviour of politicians and bureaucrats and how greater accountability can improve government effectiveness.
