Mohammad Omar Masud is serving as the CEO of The Urban Unit since June 2020. He has worked as Additional Secretary of Budget in the Finance Department Government of Punjab, dealing with provincial and municipal budgets. Before that he was Assistant Commissioner Nowshera, where he worked as a sub-divisional magistrate.
At the Urban Unit, he is managing a team of over 150 professionals working on different aspects of urbanization and advising different levels of governments in Pakistan. Currently he is focusing on how urban data can be made an effective urban policy and action instrument at the city, local, and regional level.
He has a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. His thesis at MIT was on smartphones in bureaucracy of the Punjab. He also has a Masters in Public Policy from Princeton University, USA Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
