Nandita works on issues of urbanisation, migration, poverty andlabour markets. At IHD she has been the principal researcher of the study on The Nature of Poverty in Small and Medium Towns, constituted by the Steering Committee for the Identification of Urban Poor in India. The study was commissioned by Planning Commission and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation. She is an Associate Editor of the Delhi Human Development Report 2013 published by Academic Foundation and IHD and has co-authored two of its chapters. Presently, she is conducting research on urbanisation and rural-urban linkages in Bihar. Before joining IHD, she has worked on livelihoods, access to basic services and sanitation issues in Delhi.
