Currently, Dr. Sengupta is Sukhamoy Chakravarty Chair Professor of Development Planning of the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi 110067, INDIA.

Post Doctoral teaching and research experience of 38 years at JNU, New Delhi and Presidency College (now Presidency University), Calcutta together.

Dr. Sengupta is former Advisor, (Energy Modelling) of the Indian Planning Commission, Government of India., former Professor of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, a premier business school of India, and former Independent Director on the Board of Directors of the Steel Authority of India, the largest steel company of India as an expert nominee of the Government of India.

He is also past ICCR Chair Professor at the University of Hamburg nominated by the Government of India, former Visiting Professor / Visiting Scholar at the Kobe University, Japan, University of Pennsylvania, USA, University of Applied Sciences at Osnabrueck, Germany, University of Boston, USA, University of Erasmus, Rotterdam and University of Twente, Netherlands, and University of Calgary, Canada.
