Call for papers: IGC-WB-GWU Young Urban Economist Workshop

The World Bank, the International Growth Centre (IGC), and George Washington University (GWU) will convene a Young Urban Economist Workshop as part of their annual Urbanisation and Poverty Reduction Conference. The conference will take place at the World Bank, Washington DC, from 30 to 31 January 2023, with the Young Urban Economist Workshop occurring on 31 January. Information on previous versions of the conference is available here.

This year, the conference’s theme is climate change and sustainable urbanisation. We are soliciting papers using economics methodology from PhD students and early-career researchers (within 3 years from PhD) on the below themes:

  • Climate change and cities in developing economies
  • Sustainable urbanisation in developing economies
  • Low-carbon infrastructure and urban resilience in developing economies

The workshop aims to stimulate sharing and discussion of frontier scholarly research on these important themes. It will be led by two prominent economists—Professor Ed Glaeser and Professor Gilles Duranton—and will include prominent policymakers from the World Bank and other speakers from the conference. The selected students and researchers will also be invited to a half-day policy workshop with developing economy policymakers.
