The IGC has an ongoing engagement in Tanzania, where we work with policymakers and researchers to promote inclusive and sustainable growth through effective macroeconomic management and domestic resource mobilisation. Our work with the Tanzanian Revenue Authority has enhanced its capacity to enforce taxes through the effective use of administrative data and informed its rollout of consumer incentive schemes to improve VAT collection.

About
IGC Tanzania was established in 2008 as the IGC’s first country programme. Since then, we have held extended consultation with local policymakers, researchers, the private sector and civil society to support Tanzania’s response to sustainable growth challenges.
Earlier projects focused on firm capabilities, urbanisation, natural resources and macroeconomic management. Since 2022, our focus has shifted to domestic resource mobilisation, but remains broadly focused on inclusive and sustainable growth. Our Tax for Growth initiative works closely with Tanzanian policymakers to improve tax capacity, step-up climate financing, improve market access for farmers, and support the Bank of Tanzania forecast inflation more accurately.
