Ideas Matter: What is stopping developing countries from taxing more?
The IGC aims to identify improvements in state capabilities so states can provide the services necessary for inclusive, sustainable growth and poverty reduction. On state fragility, we examine how to strengthen political institutions and the connections between political inclusion and economic growth. We work on how to rethink growth policies, social protection, and poverty reduction programmes to ensure people can permanently lift themselves out of poverty. Finally, we look at ways state policies can be more effective for inclusive and sustainable growth, including improving tax compliance, ensuring bureaucracies are more effective, and reducing waste in spending.
